Nate Diaz and Jake Paul both behaved badly in the lead-up to the bout

Of course, Conor McGregor was following this weekend’s boxing bout between his old (and perhaps future) rival Nate Diaz and YouTube influencer Jake Paul.

Neither Jake Paul nor (especially) Nate Diaz covered themselves with glory with their conduct during the pre-fight build-up. Nate engaged in a street brawl in New Orleans a few weeks before the fight and then sprinkled his statements at the pre-fight presser with enough homophobic slurs to draw significant media attention.

Here’s what CNN reported about Diaz statements.

“Diaz was participating in a press conference before the fight, which is happening on Saturday at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas when he was confronted by Betr’s Derek Sullivan.

“Diaz reacted angrily after Sullivan said he couldn’t wait to watch Paul knock Diaz out and invited Sullivan on the stage. Diaz used homophobic slurs to refer to both Sullivan and Paul during the verbal tirade that ensued.”

Outsports had more:

“Hey, bring this little b*tch up here,” Diaz said to Sullivan. “Get him the f**k out here. They are lacking respect, all the p*****s in your f****g faggot’s camp, motherf***r. That’s the problem… This guy is influencing the f*****g Island gay boys because they are mother f****s like you b*tch. You are the f*****g bad guy, and this little f**k right here needs his a** whipped.”

Diaz was suspended by the UFC for homophobic tweeting in 2013. He was unrepentant at the time.

Jake Paul lowered himself to Diaz’ level during a pre-fight interview with Ariel Helwani. More from Outsports:

“In the news conference, both fighters were asked by Helwani: ‘Gentlemen, every great story has a hero and a villain, in this situation, who is the good guy and who is actually the bad guy?’

“Diaz’s response? ‘Jake’s the gay guy.’

“Paul then said: ‘Yes sir, I’m going to grab your cheeks in the ring on Saturday night. Everybody look out, I’m grabbing his cheeks.’

“Not to be outdone in the homophobia department, Paul said he would sexually assault Diaz when he was asked a hypothetical.

“Q: What happens if the two of you meet on a dark street and there’s nobody around?

“Paul: ‘Imma bend him over and fuck him like a cowboy. Goddamn right.’

USA Today: ‘Boxing doesn’t need Nate Diaz’

Boxing writer Mike Freeman took umbrage and wrote it up for USA Today.

“…in a remarkably tone-deaf statement Tela Mange, spokesperson for the Texas Boxing Commission, told USA TODAY Sports by email that, “We do not regulate what the fighters say to each other or anyone else.”

“Boxing isn’t a place for saints. All sports and leagues have their goons. I mean, Deshaun Watson has a job. Boxing has had plenty of bad guys. I get that.

“But boxing is making a bad deal with the devil by embracing Diaz. If the sport thinks Diaz is a fix for its problems, that’s just dead wrong. Maybe because he’s a big name he provides a sugar high, a short-term spike, but as his use of a slur (twice) shows, he’s more likely to embarrass boxing than help save it.

“Again, boxing has long had its issues and bad guys. It doesn’t need another one. It especially doesn’t need one who has twice insulted an entire community of people and hasn’t learned any lessons.

“Boxing doesn’t need Nate Diaz.”

Conor McGregor takes to Twitter and says ‘hold my beer’

Conor McGregor watchers had to know he wasn’t going to let this massive bout between his former UFC rival Nate Diaz and Jake Paul go unremarked.

Initially Conor limited himself to bagging on Nate’s performance in the fight. He tweeted and deleted but MMA Junkie grabbed them screenshots.

Then McGregor turned his attention to Jake Paul with another slur-filled (and since-deleted) tweet.

Jake Paul responds with advice for McGregor

“Buddy you need to get into rehab and then USADA. Until then shut the f*ck up. Floyd toyed with you. Dustin chinned you up. Khabib and Nate choked you out. And I would put you in the coffin for good even as juiced up as you are,” Paul tweeted.

Since Conor deleted the Tweet Paul was responding to, here it is.

Conor brought a new slur in for his reply.

Jake had an answer for that.

A professional cage-fighter chose the better part of valor this weekend when he was robbed at a gas station by four armed men.

UFC’s Song Yadong reveals he was robbed at gunpoint

The UFC bantamweight fighter posted on Instagram and revealed his traumatic experience and wise response.

“For the first time in my life, I was held at gunpoint,” the 25-year-old bantamweight fighter said on Thursday.

“Last night, my friend and I drove back to Sacramento from San Francisco. On the way back, we were robbed by four black men at gunpoint.

“When we got there, those four Black people who robbed us were already there,”  Yadong said. “They’re not following us, they’re waiting for the victim.”

“Yadong — who last fought in April — says after they grabbed water at the gas station store, they were approached and held at gunpoint while the perpetrators demanded their valuables. Song says his friend was pistol-whipped.”

“The man told him to hand over his money, his wallet, his necklace, and hit him with the handle of his gun,” Yadong said.

“The incident happened at about 2 a.m. at the Royal gas station on Tennessee Street in Vallejo.

“They all had ski masks on. Every single one,” Lin said.

“‘”‘Lin told NBC Bay Area that he had just purchased a bottle of water when he turned around and saw one of the young men with a gun pointed right in his face. And he was pulling at the gold chains around Lin’s neck.

“’He took my chain, one of my rings, everything in my pockets and once he got ahold of my car keys, he unlocked the car,’ he said.

“’That’s when I realized the man already put a gun in front of my head,’ he said.

“Yadong said he was shocked to see a gun in his face and he gave the thieves a necklace, a wallet and his phone because he might be tough but he says he knows better than to fight someone with a gun.

“’You know, it’s a real gun. If he moves his finger, you’re done. No chance to be the world champion,’”’ he said.

“Lin said that he couldn’t convince a worker at the gas station to call 911 and he became so upset that he regrettably hit a window with a golf club from his trunk.

“Both men are also expressing frustration for what they say is lawlessness in the Bay Area.

“’I kind of grew up in the Bay Area. Always loved the Bay Area. Now, if there’s not a reason to go to the Bay Area, I wouldn’t and I think that’s just sad,’ Lin said.

“’My friend told me don’t go out at night. But this is my first time and it’s real dangerous,’” Yadong said.

“A manager at the gas station said surveillance video of what happened early Wednesday morning has already been deleted.

“The gas station manager also declined to talk to NBC Bay Area about what happened that night and why police weren’t called immediately but police are involved now.”

UFC fighters are usually robbed by judges, not thieves

Usually when we use the word “robbery” next to “UFC fighter” in a headline it’s because a fighter is complaining about how the judges scored his fight.

Sadly, sometimes the fighter himself is the suspect in felonious acts.

Sometimes the fighter is the “good guy” and actually fends off the robber — you’ll note no gun was involved.

Ngannou recently made headlines when he signed the biggest possible professional boxing debut against Tyson Fury.

WBC heavyweight champ Tyson Fury has confirmed to Sky News that he will be facing former UFC heavyweight champ Francis Ngannou in a boxing match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on October 28. The bout will be contested under the 10 point must system with three judges ringside.

As Bloody Elbow’s John Nash reported earlier, Nate Diaz stands to make a career making payday tonight boxing against Jake Paul just as Ngannou stands to make more boxing Fury than he made in his entire career in the UFC.

Diaz will be getting a cut of everything: The pay-per-view, which they are partnering with DAZN for; The commercial (bar) pay-per-views; Tickets, with the gate projected to be over $3 million; Merchandise. And all levels of sponsorships, both in and out of the ring. 

Ngannou’s manager bragged that his man will do comparably well in his boxing debut.

“Let’s just say this: The bag is so big, he may actually just drop it on the way to the bank,” Ngannou’s manager Marquel Martin told MMA Fighting. “Let’s just say that. I don’t know what the haters are trying to say right now, I kind of just blocked it out, but they’ll just be proven wrong again. This is life-changing. This is exactly what we planned and visualized, so we’re happy.”

How big? Ngannou’s manager says its far more than everything he earned in his seven years with the UFC.

“Oh my god, (it’s bigger than career UFC earnings). I mean, by far. By multiples,” Martin said. “Just to make (this money) even while being champion, he would’ve had to fight multiple times just to (be in this ballpark).”

Amanda Serrano is on the card tonight against Heather Hardy but announced earlier this week that she was returning to MMA and signed with the PFL.

Nate Diaz is one of the UFC veterans most known for speaking freely and letting fans know what he’s really thinking. His recent interview with ESPN, was no exception.

Nate Diaz recalls his past fight records and looks to the future

When questioned about what’s most likely to change in the wake of his match with Jake Paul, Nate Diaz consistently responded, “Everything changes after every fight.” As an example, Diaz recalled his monumental 2016 fights with Conor McGregor and how they changed his career:

“First I beat [McGregor], and they were going to let me fight anybody I wanted for any title anyway. And then I rematched him, because I’m not whack, [and] I knew I was going to beat him anyway, so I want to go do it again. So I fought him again, he won in a decision, and then he ran off, and he fought for World Titles and Floyd Mayweather and did all this big stuff, and [the UFC] try to match me up with some low range fighter somewhere. And I’m like, no. I’ll take the number two guy, number one guy, whoever I wanted at the time, and they were like, nah. Like I came off of some vicious loss or something.”

Diaz also said that after his fights with Conor, he felt that he’d already proven himself in the UFC. “So I was like, well sh*t, I’ll just sit back until something big happens. I’ll sit back, then, and fight somebody when somebody does something, because there ain’t nobody fighting when everybody’s whack. And then so I sat around, I’ll wait for something big to happen, for somebody to fight, somebody that meets my criteria, because I outgrew everybody. I felt like I did more than anybody, I beat the best guy, the biggest guy, and that’s the biggest thing. So I don’t have nothing to prove on none of these guys, until somebody does something.”

Even after expressing how he was slighted for the McGregor loss, Nate bears little resentment towards the idea of returning to fight in the UFC:

“Yeah, 100 percent, yeah,” Diaz stated, when asked if still saw himself returning to the Octagon. “I still, like I said, every fight, something changes, you know?”

Diaz is in high spirits with plenty of confidence for Saturday

While going more into detail about preparation for the Paul-Diaz boxing match, Nate remained confident in his process of training and sparring; when asked about his sparring partner posting on social media about training with Diaz, Nate responded, “It comes with the territory. I know how boxing is in boxing gyms. They’re kind of ignorant to things, a lot of boxers.”

“Whenever I whoop someone’s ass, I’m tough or in good shape. [But] I’m not good, you know what I’m saying? I’m just in better shape than every boxer that I ever sparred ever, you know? So it comes with the territory, I don’t care, it’s all good.”

As for what might come after his fight with Paul? Diaz doesn’t have any particular answers ready.

“Everything changes with every fight,” he explained. “After this fight, I plan on taking over the whole world when it comes to this fight sh*t, so if anybody’s doing anything big, I’m coming for them too. So that’s my plan: To show everybody that I’m The Ultimate Fighter.”

Misfits Boxing 8 Chase DeMoor’s corner told him not to break when the ref calls for a break

Misfits Boxing 8 is live tonight. To no one’s surprise, the Chase DeMoor vs. Alan Belcher bout was hardly one for the ages. DeMoor did his best to obey his corner’s instructions and hug Belcher as tight as possible, as often as possible and as long as possible.

Considering that DeMoor took the bout on 24 hours notice when Hasim Rahman Jr. had to drop out, maybe his performance is explicable if not quite forgivable.

DeMoor did everything humanly possible to avoid contact with Belcher, stiff-arming the UFC vet and backing away. If Belcher managed to bat DeMoor’s lead arm away, Chase clinched, strictly trying to survive and frustrating Belcher something awful in the process.

DeMoor’s corner added to the fiasco when they told him to ignore the referee’s instructions to break from the clinch. Belcher responded by swinging for the fences with every single punch he threw, looking to bring the disaster to an end. Then things got silly.

Belcher finally cornered DeMoor against the ropes, and started wailing away. DeMoor responded by turning his back and going toward his own corner. That got ref Anthony Bryant involved only for DeMoor’s corner to start yelling about illegal punches to the back of the head.

From that point on it was like a no kayfabe pro wrestling match with the ref completely distracted by his argument with DeMoor’s corner. Bryant tried to restart the action, but DeMoor’s corner insisted on watering their fighter mid-round.

Finally the ref managed to restart the action at which point Belcher was straight-up wilding on the hapless DeMoor who turned his back again causing the ref to call a TKO stoppage and declare Belcher the victor.

Paul Craig is making his middleweight debut tomorrow at UFC London: Aspinall vs Tybura after a full decade of fighting at light heavyweight.

Paul Craig moving to UFC middleweight division following losses

The 35-year-old fighter is 8-6-1 as a light heavyweight (205 pounds) in the UFC where he’s been fighting since 2015. Following back-to-back losses to Johnny Walker and Volkan Oezdemir, he elected to cut to 185 pounds and fight in the middleweight division. He is the 9th ranked fighter in the UFC LHW division.

The 6 foot, 4 inch tall “Bearjew” showed all the ravages of a serious weight cut at today’s UFC London weigh-ins.

Paul Craig described ‘horrible’ UFC London weight cut

Craig talked about the brutal weight cut on his Leathered podcast in May (transcription via MMA News):

“It’s horrible, man… I would normally diet and we’d cut, I’m talking like, a couple of kilograms, two at the absolute max. Whereas this was eight kilograms of water weight,” Craig said.

“Middleweight, we were big. We were f*cking huge… (On Thursday) I done my 30-40 minute run, spent 20 minutes in the sauna, and then done a 40-minute wrap… Went to bed, slept relatively alright… Woke up about half five… fired on some sweet sweat, jumped in the bath for 20 minutes… Land on the wrap, 20 minutes in there.

“Then the nutritionist is like, ‘Nah Paul, that’s it, we’ve made it… That’s us, we’ve made the weight.’ I’m like, ‘Nah, we’ve still got an extra 0.4 to go.’ I wanted to make sure we could do it (championship weight)… What’s the point of going to the strippers and not getting a lap dance? I need to know I could do it,” Craig continued. “Jumped back in the bath, 20 minute in the bath, and we were bang on the money… Thumbs up.”

Craig asked agent where does UFC matchmaker want me?

Craig also detailed a conversation with his agent in which he revealed the decision was not entirely his own.

“I’ve been speaking to my agent last night, and the questions they (UFC) asked were, ‘What do you wanna do? You wanna fight at light heavyweight or middleweight?’ I said, ‘Tell me what you want.’ Where does Mick Maynard, the matchmaker, where does he want me. I’m a company guy. Tell me who to fight and I’ll fight him.”

UFC.com’s official preview of the fight does its best to curse everyone with a sloppy kickboxing match since both fighters are skilled grapplers.

“Ideally, this turns out to be a high-level grappling match that just so happens to take place inside the Octagon, as Craig and Muniz are masters of their craft and their pairing has the potential to be exhilarating. Do what you’ve got to do in order to appease the fight gods so they may deliver us the grappling battle this deserves to be.”

Kingpyn boxing and Only Fans star Daniella Hemsley got a LOT of attention by flashing the cameras and crowd after scoring her first win inside the boxing ring Saturday at the Kingpyn Boxing semi-finals.

Hemsley had too much fun celebrating her win at Kingpyn Boxing

Kingpyn boxing has issued a statement in the aftermath, via The Sun:

“As we strive to bring fans the best influencer boxing events possible, we accept that Saturday’s post-fight incident may have offended some viewers and appreciate that this incident didn’t meet the standards expected from Kingpyn fight nights.

“We apologise fully to anyone upset during the broadcast.

“The fighter involved in the incident will not be appearing in the Final event and has decided to take some time away from boxing.

“We will now be turning our attention to the Kingpyn Finals, with all of us more determined than ever to hold the greatest night of influencer boxing and showcase the very best of the sport we all love.”

Whew. Good to hear that Kingpyn Boxing takes their role as purveyors of celebrity facepunching with the seriousness the sport deserves.

Some might even say excessively so.

UPDATE: Hemsley not banned, just too injured to fight

Kingpyn Boxing issued a terse and mildly cryptic statement about Daniella Hemsely’s future with the promotion after her post-fight antics, leading many outlets (including this one) to surmise that she had been effectively iced by the celebrity fight promotion.

After all, when a promoter takes the time to say someone “won’t be appearing” at an event they were expected for after a big PR stunt misfire, it’s hard not to assume that that’s an order coming from the top. But, to hear Hemsley herself tell it, that’s not the case. In a video posted to her YouTube channel, the OnlyFans star revealed that she was indeed taking “some time away from boxing.” But not as any kind of punishment.

The reality is that Hemsley’s second career exhibition fight left her too injured to compete again in the near future. The social media influencer revealed that she likely has a broken thumb as a result of her win over Alexandra Daniel at the Kingpyn semis and may have even broken her elbow as well.

“After my fight, [I] came out, got into the medical room and I’m being checked out by the doctor,” Hemsley explained (transcript via MMA Fighting). “He’s doing the eye checks, the everything checks, and he’s taking my wraps off on my hands and I said to him, ‘I think I’ve broken my thumb.’ I literally even now I can like barely move it and I think I’ve also broken my elbow. I still need to get it scanned but I’ve been so lazy but I literally can’t straighten it.

“Which brings me on to say, there is a lot of speculation in the media at the moment about me being banned. Article after article after article. I am not banned from Kingpyn, guys. I have simply decided to take a few weeks off from training, to recover, to recover my body, and I plan on coming back fighting again hopefully in the winter.”

“My opinion is, I hate it,” Hearn said of Hemsley flashing the crowd (transcript via MMA Fighting). “I hate it. We’ve worked so hard for women in boxing to be respected for their ability, for their merits, for their hard work. One thing we must understand is that ain’t boxing. That needs to be pushed. All that stuff — Misfits, Kingpyn, all that stuff. It needs to be booted so far away from professional boxing, and we really need to disassociate ourselves with what it is.

“It does great numbers. It’s entertainment. It’s all of those things, and what we saw there [with Hemsley]. For me, what I’m trying to do and what we’ve been doing for years and years, the sacrifices people have made to be respected — again, it’s not boxing. But at the same time, I think it’s more of a reflection of society than a reflection of good or bad for boxing. I don’t like it.”

“Unfortunately, we now live in a world where role models, or influencers, are not necessarily doing things that the older generation, which I class myself as, or parents would want your kids to see or think is acceptable,” Hearn added, noting that he’s loved having his daughters spend time with a professional fighter like Katie Taylor.

“[It’s] nothing to do with women, nothing to do with men. You want your kids to behave in a certain way. That’s not a way you’d want your kids to behave, in my opinion. This is only my opinion. But we live in a f—king mental world. Unfortunately, clout is just being chased all over the place. To each their own.”

Boxing did this to itself

As Bloody Elbow’s Zane Simon opined, boxing can only blame itself for this mess.

As much as it’s easy to understand Hearn’s knee-jerk dislike for the kind of buffoonery that celebrity boxing brings, combat sports have always had a courting relationship with some of their more carnival-esque iterations. In part, the ease of training compared to more organized stick & ball sports has kept the bar to entry impossibly low. Technically any two people that can get some gloves and a ring together can find a way to put on a boxing match for money. That’s not so easily done with a game of hockey.

However, It also has to be noted that promoters, boxers, and even legislators have worked to keep that bar to entry low for the sake of their own self interest. With so few pieces in play and such a huge potential for money making ventures, the cash that can be gotten from keeping boxing disorganized and from chasing whatever the hot fight of the moment might be means that there’s always room in the game for some total nonsense.

Disaster strikes another UFC card! This time it’s UFC Nashville on August 5 that’s looking for a brand new main event fighter.

Umar Nurmagomedov is off the UFC Nashville card

According to The Schmozone on Twitter that’s all she wrote for Cory Sandhagen vs Umar Nurmagomedov.

This was a much anticipated bout between one of the most ducked fighters in the UFC bantamweight division (Nurmagomedov) and the former interim title challenger (Sandhagen).

When the bout was announced, UFC boss Dana White said, “This is as high level of a fight as you can get,” said White. “It is what I love about making fights like this. You have two of the very best in the world facing off in the prime of their careers. Ladies and gentlemen, you do not want to miss this one.”

Sadly, if the reports are confirmed we’re all going to have to miss this one now.

Sandhagen on why he accepted the bout

When the bout was announced, many questioned why Sandhagen would accept such a high-risk, low-reward fight.

“Hey, I know you guys saw the announcement. I’m fighting August 5 against Umar Nurmagomedov,” said Sandhagen in an Instagram video. “I’m getting a lot of haters, saying, ‘why would you fight this far down in the rankings?’ He’s going to beat my ass, blah, blah, blah. Two reasons. One, Umar is a great fighter and I’m not trying to be world champ if I’m not the actual best in the entire world. So fighting Umar is a great challenge and I accept it.

“And No. 2? Because I’m a beast b—h,” continued Sandhagen. “That’s why. Peace, I’ll see you guys in Nashville.”

Conor McGregor went to Prenton, Merseyside to attend the funeral of his aunt Pamela McGregor and apparently had to leave the scene in a hurry following an alleged fracas.

McGregor was caught on video leaving the funeral in a hurry. The footage shows the UFC star leaving The Saddle pub where the service was held with security guards in a hurry, shooing fans away from the car.

Police statement

Merseyside police are looking into the affray according to The Sun.

“We were called to The Saddle pub in Prenton, Wirral, at 7.50pm last night, Tuesday 18th July, to reports of an altercation.

“Officers attended the pub and spoke to a number of people. Further enquiries are being carried out to establish what has taken place.

“At this stage no complaints have been made and nobody has been arrested.”

Troubled year for McGregor

Conor McGregor has been in the press quite a bit in recent months and rarely has it been with positive news. He faces new sexual assault allegations following an appearance at a Miami Heat game last month. His team on The Ultimate Fighter has taken a shellacking at the hands of Michael Chandler’s squad.

And his planned return to the UFC Octagon has yet to be booked, apparently because of issues with USADA’s drug testing program.

Floyd Mayweather’s grandson is the subject of a leaked interview with rap star NBA YoungBoy. And it ain’t friendly conversation.

In an interview audio snippet leaked to InstaGram by The Neighborhood Talk, an interviewer believed to be DJ Akademiks asks if NBA YoungBoy’s son will grow up to be a boxer like his legendary granddad.

“Change the subject gangsta. He going to be a UFC Fighter,” was NBA YoungBoy’s answer.

Things have been contentious amongst the extended clan for a bit. Last month, NBA YoungBoy ripped Floyd and his daughter on IG live.

“I hope you do that b-tch the worst way, two, three years from now. I don’t give a f-ck, it ain’t my business, I hate that h-e. And when it come to her daddy, that n-gga don’t need to be in my mentions, I don’t f-ck with him. Your brother lost the fight.

“Every man gotta lose, every dog have their day, man, that’s how it go. I idolize your daddy. Man, next time you ever disrespect me, y’all gonna have to bomb me. Have a blessed day, beautiful.”

NBA YoungBoy was responding to Nicolette Gotti following Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition fight and post-fight brawl with John Gotti III.

For his part, the legendary boxer has had good things to say about NBA YoungBoy, telling The Pivot Podcast in February, “I’m proud of him, a very, very talented young kid. One of the biggest artists as far as in music. He’s got a cult-like following. I look at him just like one of my sons. I only want the best for him.

“I feel like NBA YoungBoy went away for a while — I like to say went to college for a little bit — he’s back and I’m proud of him. I’m proud of my daughter. And I only want the best for NBA YoungBoy. I’m going to continue to push him and push her for both of them to be great.”

NBA YoungBoy’s rocky relationship with Yaya Mayweather

NBA YoungBoy and Yaya Mayweather dated from 2018 to 2020. She gave birth to their son later that year. Their relationship broke off and has been rocky in the time since.

In an unreleased track titled “Carry On,” YB claims Yaya won’t let him see their son.

“She doesn’t want KJ to come, but then she tries to FaceTime him with me, but I don’t want to talk at all/I don’t give a f*ck. Go tell the critics, b*tch,” he raps on the track that leaked in January.

UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has been anything but shy when it comes to sharing his opinions about the newly-signed Francis Ngannou vs Tyson Fury boxing bout.

Chael has been critical of Francis Ngannou leaving the UFC

Chael Sonnen was only one of many UFC-adjacent types who spent much of the spring of 2023 ripping Francis Ngannou’s choice to leave the UFC and sign with the Professional Fighting League.

In April, Sonnen was talking about Ngannou’s age and allegedly frail health and trying to imply that a boxing match with Tyson Fury was at best a pipe dream. Here’s what he said at a BKFC presser in April:

“There are not a lot of (opponent options),” Sonnen said. “If we’re playing chess here, I don’t have two or three steps for Francis. I don’t know how old Francis is. He says he’s 36. He’s at least 36. I don’t know how old he is. I’m not sure he knows how old he is.

“I don’t bring that up to try to be funny. His body has already given out on him. He’s already telling somebody, ‘I’m on the free market. Bid a whole bunch of money for me. By the way, I’ve got a bad knee.’ Nobody in the world… no coach looks at a guy who is hurt and old and pays him a bigger check. It’s a really weird situation. I want him to get it figured out. I don’t say it to tease him. Time is ticking. Everyday he’s not signed, he’s losing.

“Let me put this in perspective for you. This is a very big deal. Three days ago was April 1 and they put out an April 1 joke. Tyson Fury put out an April 1 joke on social media that he and Francis was done and they are fighting in Wembley on May 15.

“Tyson Fury made a joke. Francis has changed his whole life. His whole life is different because he thought he was going to make up a sport and do it with a guy who is now using it as an April Fool’s joke. What ever has happened here? He’s got to get some cold water. He has to wake up and he needs to call back his boss.”

Sonnen pivots to attacking Fury

Sonnen went on The Schmo this week and changed his angle of attack now that the bout is signed, sealed and delivered (transcribed by MMA Mania).

“It’s the most ridiculous sporting competition of our lifetime,” Sonnen said. “Let me give you an example. Take the Lakers and the real Lakers right back when they had the guy named Shaq and Kobe Bryant; rest his soul. I don’t know if LeBron was ever on that team.

“But remember when they were really good? And you got Phil Jackson as a coach; take them and go put them against [Tom] Brady and The Patriots. Right? You got these great teams, but you’re gonna go do it under football rules. Do you see how stupid it is? Do you see why it’s never happened? You see why it’s never even been discussed? That’s what’s happening here.

“What kind of a scumbag is Fury, though, man? I really gotta tell you, Fury broke my heart. I liked this guy, and I liked the entertainment. I like so many things about him,” Sonnen said. You take a guy like Fury, who God made huge, gave great coaches, great training partners, great experiences, too. He has weapons and tools that other men can’t deal with if they’re not armed.

“And he’s going to choose to use those to beat up a guy who’s at least 37 with no experience and is on one leg. That’s a bully, and it’s a scumbag. I would never do that to somebody…Jesse James made a lot of money, and there’s hitmen that made a lot of money. I mean, there’s things that you can do, but you own it. You’re a bully, and you’re a scumbag.”

I’m sure Francis Ngannou is grateful to Sonnen standing up for him against mean old Tyson Fury.

Elle Brooke loses hard-fought decision to Julla Poca

Elle Brooke, the Only Fans adult model turned celebrity boxer, fought TikTok sensation Julla Poca tonight at Kingpyn Boxing in England. Unfortunately for Brooke and her fans she dropped a unanimous decision to Poca.

Brooke’s boxing career up to now

Elle Brooke’s transition to cross-over boxing came through Kingpyn Boxing in 2022. On their Settling Scores event in London she fought AJ Bunker, winning by unanimous decision (50-45,49-46,49-46).

She then appeared with KSI’s Misfits Boxing promotion. At KSI vs. Faze Temperr in January she beat Faith Ordway by TKO.

Elle’s famous exchange with Piers Morgan

Brooke owes a good chunk of her celebrity status to UK TV presenter Piers Morgan who had her on his show, apparently to chastise her life choices.

After Morgan asked her “Will you be proud when your little ones look at you and go didn’t you want to be a lawyer mummy?”

“They can can cry in a Ferrari,” answered Brooke.

UFC 290 saw a legend go out on top

No matter what else happens at UFC 290, it’s already one for the history books. UFC legend Robbie Lawler ended his 22 year professional MMA career with a first round KO win over Niko Price.

“It was a hard training camp, nothing was going right. Today was the first day I felt good. My feet were moving really good, so I was like ‘Okay I’m gonna do something pretty good today,’ and just happened to land some big bombs,” Lawler said at the end of the bout

“It was good. It was just the ending of a career. I was landing some big shots in good places, temples, chin. It was just too much. I was moving well. It was just nice to end my career like this. These fans have been great this week, the media’s been great. Thanks for the support.”

“It’s amazing, I’ve had a long career. I’ve had a lot of people help me get to where I am today. Without them, none of this is possible. I’m blessed. I’m grateful.”

Lawler’s storied career saw him win UFC gold

Lawler had an impressive career in the sport. He was born on March 20, 1982, in San Diego, California. Lawler was known for his aggressive fighting style, knockout power, and durability inside the cage.

Lawler began his professional MMA career in 2001. He fought for several organizations before making his way to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2002. At the age of 20, Lawler became the youngest fighter ever to compete in the UFC at the time.

During his early years in the UFC, Lawler showcased his knockout power and earned a reputation as a dangerous striker. He had notable victories over fighters like Aaron Riley, Chris Lytle, and Tiki Ghosn. However, Lawler struggled to find consistent success and was released from the UFC in 2004 after three consecutive losses.

After leaving the UFC, Lawler fought for various promotions, including PRIDE and Icon Sport, and had mixed results. He also took a brief hiatus from MMA to pursue a career in professional kickboxing. Lawler’s time away from the sport allowed him to refine his skills and make improvements to his game.

In 2013, Lawler returned to the UFC and had a remarkable career resurgence. He quickly made his mark in the welterweight division, earning impressive victories over notable fighters such as Josh Koscheck, Rory MacDonald, and Jake Ellenberger. Lawler’s aggressive fighting style and knockout power made him a fan favorite.

In 2014, Lawler competed for the vacant UFC Welterweight Championship against Johny Hendricks. After a back-and-forth battle, Lawler emerged victorious via a split decision, becoming the UFC Welterweight Champion. He defended the title twice, defeating Rory MacDonald in a memorable rematch and Carlos Condit in a Fight of the Year contender.

Lawler’s reign as champion came to an end in 2016 when he lost the title to Tyron Woodley via first-round knockout. He then faced Donald Cerrone and Rafael dos Anjos, suffering defeats in both fights.

Despite these setbacks, Lawler remained a top contender in the welterweight division. He continued to put on exciting fights against opponents such as Ben Askren, Colby Covington, and Neil Magny. While Lawler didn’t always come out on top in these matchups, he consistently displayed his trademark intensity and striking prowess.

Throughout his career, Lawler has received numerous accolades, including Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night bonuses. He has also been recognized as one of the most entertaining fighters in the sport, known for his willingness to engage in toe-to-toe slugfests.

UFC 290 off to a banging start

UFC 290’s first knockout was almost one for the record books as it is the second-fastest KO in UFC flyweight division history. But Dustin Ortiz’ record remains safe. Aguilar caught Ross backing straight up and landed a smashing overhand right on the nose. Let’s look at the action:

Aguilar came in off a loss to Tatsuro Taira at UFC Vegas 68 and picked up his first UFC win tonight. He’s now 9-2 as a professional. Ross drops to 13-8 with his second straight loss and his third in the promotion.

UFC 290 fight cancelled at the last minute to protect fighter’s health

UFC 290 saw Jack Della Maddalena go through hell trying to make it to fight night. The Aussie had originally been booked for a top-ranking welterweight bout against fast-rising Renzo Gracie Philly product Sean Brady, before Brady was forced from the card with an undisclosed injury on June 30th. Instead, the UFC found a late replacement in Matt Brown training partner Josiah Harrell.

The “Muscle Hamster” stepped up but it wasn’t to be. A 6-0 fighter training out of Immortal Martial Arts and Grove City BJJ in Ohio, Harrell had never been subjected to medical testing as thorough as the UFC’s.

UFC CEO Dana White was shocked but not surprised.

“If you took the 23 years that we’ve been doing this and you saw how many people we found with problems that probably shouldn’t have been fighting, even kids that wanted to get into The Ultimate Fighter, it’s everything, and it’s insane that this goes on out there,” White told reporters at the UFC 290 pre-fight scrum.

“These other organizations are regulated. Yeah, it’s crazy. We spend millions and millions of dollars on health and safety. It is the most important thing that we focus on and that we care about as far as putting on fights.”

UFC 290 Preview: Alexander Volkanovski vs Yair Rodriguez

The headliner features UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski is returning to the division after moving up to challenge lightweight champ Islam Makhachev in February. That unanimous decision loss was the first mar on his record since a 2013 loss by TKO to Corey Nelson.

Volkanovski has defended the 145lb title four times since taking it from Max Holloway in 2019. Two of those title defenses came against Holloway, who earned the rubber match at UFC 276 because many felt he won their rematch at UFC 251 in 2020. Volkanovski also beat Brian Ortega and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung in title fights.

Rodriguez is bringing a two-fight win streak into the bout, coming off wins over Josh Emmett and Brian Ortega. Prior to that he dropped a unanimous decision to Max Holloway in November, 2021.

UFC 290 Preview: Brandon Moreno vs Alexandre Pantoja

The co-main event features Flyweight champ Brandon Moreno defending his title against Alexandre Pantoja. Moreno unified the title with a TKO win over Deiveson Figueiredo in January of this year. That was his fourth bout against Figueiredo since 2020, all of which had the title on the line. He dropped a decision to Figueiredo in 2022 after submitting him in 2021 following a draw in their first bout in 2020. Moreno became the interim flyweight champ by beating Kai Kara-France last July.

Pantoja brings a three-fight win streak into the title bout. He’s coming off wins over Alex Perez, Brandon Royval, and Manel Kape. He’s 9-3 in the UFC including a 2018 decision win over Moreno.

Stacked card also features Whittaker vs Du Plessis

This is a pretty stacked card featuring a middleweight contender bout between former champ Robert Whittaker and Dricus du Plessis. Du Plessis has gotten plenty of attention since going 5-0 in the Octagon since joining the promotion in 2020. Four out of his five wins have come via finish with two knock outs, one TKO and one submission.

Many critics felt du Plessis should have moved immediately to a title shot against Israel Adesanya since Whittaker has already lost to the champ twice and seems unlikely to get a third title shot. But Dana White and company prefer to do things the hard way and they are making sure that du Plessis earns his title shot with a win over Bobby Knuckles.

The card also features Dana White Contenders Series winner Bo Nickal against Tresean Gore and the legendary Robbie Lawler against Niko Price.

Working in a sand mine from age 9

National Public Radio has a big feature interview with the world’s reigning MMA heavyweight champ, Francis Ngannou. They introduce him as “baddest man on the planet” the heir to Mike Tyson and mention that “he holds the record for the world’s strongest punch. One strike from him is the equivalent of getting hit full speed by a small car.”

It was a long, hard journey to get to the Octagon. Francis worked in a sand mine in Cameroon alongside his siblings from age 9.

“We had no choice, we needed to survive, so it was like a survival job,” Ngannou says of the experience.

The decision to emigrate to Europe

Ngannou held onto his childhood dream of becoming a boxing champion like his hero Mike Tyson. Unfortunately, there was no was no path to athletic stardom open in his native country. So he made the decision to migrate.

“You don’t just wake up one day and leave your country even without knowing where you’re going, knowing that you’re taking all the risk in the world; you might not come back alive,” Ngannou told NPR.

Crossing deserts, oceans, borders

Ngannou detailed the arduous travels he made from Cameroon to France, listing every country he travelled through in the 2000 mile trek to the Mediterranean sea.

Ngannou: “From Cameroon to Nigeria, then Nigeria, Niger, from Niger to Algeria, then from Algeria to Morocco.”

NPR: “From Morocco, he needed to somehow get into Spanish territory. Then, even if he wasn’t technically on the continent of Europe, he’d officially be on European land. Now there were only two ways to do that: The first was to go over multiple fences with police patrols and barbed wire. Ngannou attempted that but failed. So he tried option number two.”

Ngannou: “The other way was to put the raft, inflatable raft, the one that you usually use in your swimming pool, put it in the ocean and try to get somewhere that the land in Morocco is close to the land in Europe.”

Sounds impossible, even deadly. Ngannou tried it six times over the course of one year. Between those attempts. He lived in a Moroccan forest where he and other migrants competed with rats for scraps of spoiled food in the trash. 

‘What’s MMA?’

If that wasn’t enough, when he crossed the sea he was thrown in jail:

NPR: “Finally Ngannou and his inflatable raft made it to Spanish waters. There, he was picked up by a Red Cross boat. After two months in Spanish prison, he was given refugee status and freed. Ngannou made his way to Paris and joined a fighting gym; that’s where his coaches introduced him to this new thing called MMA. 

“I was like, What’s mma? He’s like, mixed martial arts. I’m like okay, cool, fancy, but what it is? So he has to explain to me like, yeah, it’s boxing and wrestling and this. I’m like, bro, leave me alone. What I want is like, straight boxing. “

Finding Fernand Lopez and the Factory

The NPR story doesn’t go into the details of his coaches and camp in Paris, but Bloody Elbow’s own Tim Bissell did an in-depth piece on Ngannou’s coach Fernand Lopez, also an immigrant from Cameroon to France. Here’s a little bit of Lopez’ tale:

“Their relationship began in 2013 when a dishevelled Ngannou poked his head into Lopez’s MMA Factory gym (then named CrossFight) off of Rue de Picpus in south central Paris.

“Ngannou had made the journey to France from Cameroon to pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer. After making it to Europe, with no money and little more than the clothes on his back, Ngannou walked the streets of Paris asking strangers where to find a boxing gym.

“Though he didn’t find a place to live, Ngannou was able to find somewhere to train and spend most of his time. But the gym closed on weekends and holidays and, on those days, Ngannou would kill time at homeless centers. On one of those days, Ngannou decided to spend his time searching for a gym he could train at when his regular spot was closed.

“That was when he discovered MMA Factory, during one of Lopez’s rare days off. The trainer who was present was taken aback by Ngannou’s size and physique. He heard him out about wanting to train in boxing, but not having money to pay for classes. The trainer told Ngannou to come back the next day, to meet Lopez.”

Ouch! NFL veteran Austen Lane made the least of his UFC debut today when he accidentally put most of three fingers into opponent Justin Tafa’s eyes—note the plural—which led to a no contest ruling only 29 seconds into their bout at today’s UFC Fight Night in Florida.

That’s three of Austen Lane’s fingers buried in two eyeballs alright

Lane, a defensive end in his NFL career who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, (he wrote about getting cut from the team for Sports Illustrated), and briefly for the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears, was making his UFC debut today in Jacksonville. Lane lost to fellow NFL veteran Greg Hardy in Dana White’s Contenders Series in 2018 before winning his way to the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the 2022 edition of the show.

The New Zealand born Tafa was on his 7th fight for the promotion where he’s gone 3-3 until today.

But you’re here for gore so let’s take a look at some, first the three-finger, two-eyeball poke and then the bloody aftermath. It took the doctor and referee Dan Miragliotta over three minutes debating before Tan Dan waved off the fight. UFC announcer Jon Anik said the two opposing corners were arguing with each other during the deliberations.

Because the eyepoke was ruled an accident, the fight was declared a no contest. Justin Tafa wasn’t happy.

Three Division K-1 Champion Takeru Segawa fought the UK’s ‘British Bulldog’ Bailey Sugden for the ISKA World Lightweight title at Zenith in Paris on Saturday 24th June 2023. And to say things went awry on the fight card is an understatement.

The promoter ‘forgot to bring a bell’

British promotion Muay Thai Grand Prix put on the bout, which was a pretty big deal in the ISKA (International Sport Kickboxing Association) kickboxing world. It was the debut of the Japanese phenom on European soil. Takeru was coming off a decision loss to RIZIN star Tenshin Nasukawa in front of a huge crowd at the Tokyo Dome last fall.

He definitely made an impression, beating the reigning champ Sugden via TKO stoppage by head kick KO in the 5th round. But that’s not really the notable part about the fight card. It appears that British promotion Muay Thai Grand Prix forgot something pretty important when they packed for Paris: the bell to tell the ref when to end the rounds. Oops.

Main event unmarred but Taiga vs Karpowicz went badly wrong

Fortunately the main event seems to have been unmarred, but the undercard fighters weren’t so lucky.

This tweeter seems to have been confused about who was fighting in the messed up bout but I couldn’t resist quoting his prose:

But the confusion was wide spread with this report indicating it was Taigu who took the extra minute of damage.

Fortunately, the card headlining title fight ended within regulation time and wasn’t ruined by the mess up. But nonetheless this has to be seen as a major faux pas by the promoter and a pretty poor way to introduce a Japanese kickboxing star to a fight-hungry European audience.

Last Takeru fight left some fans frustrated too

As we reported last fall, Takeru’s last bout left some fans unhappy as well.

“Tenshin’s boxing looked sharper, and was key to him scoring a knockdown at the end of the first round. The second and third round also featured a headbutt and a trip takedown that had Tenshin wincing and complaining to the referee. Those final two stanzas were much closer, with both landing good strikes. At the end of three rounds, and with a knockdown already in the bank, it was Tenshin that scored better and was awarded with a unanimous decision.”

“It was an entertaining scrap, but for such a massive fight that took years to put on, fans were left wanting more. It’s great that it finally happened, but three short rounds just weren’t enough for a fight of this magnitude.”

Back in 2020, Lopez shot into boxing stardom with an upset win over two time Olympic gold medalist and multiple time world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko. A winner by unanimous decision, Lopez became the first man to beat Lomachenko in more than half a decade, stretching back to ‘The Matrix”s WBO featherweight title fight against Orlando Salcido in just his second pro bout.

“When I fought Loma, I took his heart”, stated Lopez. “Especially in that twelfth round. When I said, ‘C’mon!’ and he pulled back. See, I took your heart. Boom, won the fight. With Taylor, he got no heart. He got no heart, so what can I really take from this man? His life. And the only way I’m gonna make a statement is by doing that. I’m not sorry about that. Because, how do I scare people more than that? How do I put fear in everyone else’s eyes? I put fear on fear’s eyes. Take a man’s life.”

For his part, Josh Taylor may welcome the attitude. He hasn’t responded directly to the latest threat yet, but in his own pre-fight interview earlier in the week, he spoke about how he’d welcome Lopez trying to stand and fight with him, since he is the bigger man. He also brought up Lopez’s mental state, which is likely to be a topic of discussion throughout the upcoming fight week. Either way, he’s unlikely to admit to being impressed by the threat.

That’s especially true since Lopez has struggled to find his top shelf form in the years since his upset win over Lomachenko. In the fight following his victory, Lopez lost the WBA Super Lightweight title, as well as the IBF, WBO and The Ring lightweight belts, in a shocking loss to Australia’s George Kamobosos Jr. Kambosos would, himself go on to lose his belts in his very next fights, a pair of decision defeats at the hands of Devin Haney.

Lopez rallied back from his loss to Kambosos with a TKO victory over Mexico’s Pedro Campa in 2022. That win netted him the WBC/NABF and WBO international Lightweight belts. However, in a fllowup fight against Spanish southpaw Sandor Martin in December of last year, ‘The Takeover’ had another lackluster showing. He still managed to gut out the victory, but the victory came with its fair share of criticism. With the unbeaten Scotsman Taylor in front of him, it’s worth wondering if Lopez is ready to deliver at his previous elite levels.

The fight itself goes down in Maddison Square Garden, New York, on June 10th, in what is sure to be a stellar night for boxing.
